Gairy Nichols’ connection to Garden City Beach began long before Dunes Realty became one of the area’s most recognized names in real estate and vacation rentals.Gairy spent his childhood between Nichols, South Carolina, and Garden City Beach. During the school year, hunting, fishing, and small-town life filled his days. Summers were spent at the family’s beach home, where he swam in the ocean, crabbed and water-skied in Murrells Inlet, and fished from the pier.Garden City Beach looked very different then. Families often stayed in their cottages for months at a time. Air conditioning was rare, and a used U.S. Army Jeep was practically a necessity for navigating the unpaved roads of Murrells Inlet and Garden City Beach.In 1969, Gairy’s father, Billy Nichols, purchased a small real estate firm that would become Dunes Realty. Gairy’s summers soon shifted from non-stop fun in the sun to cleaning vacation cottages and repairing screens on oceanfront porches. Those early years gave him a ground-level understanding of the resort market from every angle: owners, guests, properties, rentals, sales, and long-term community growth.After graduating from Wofford College in 1975, Gairy continued building on that foundation. Under his leadership and family stewardship, Dunes Realty has grown into one of the most recognized names in resort real estate sales and vacation rentals along the South Strand.Giving back to the community and the real estate industry has long been part of Gairy’s life. He is a member of the National, State, and Local Realtor Associations and holds the GRI, CRS, and CRB designations. He has served on numerous Realtor association committees and remains active in the community through his long-standing service with the Garden City Beach Community Association, Garden City Chapel, Belin United Methodist Church, and other civic organizations.Gairy currently lives in Murrells Inlet with his wife, Marcia.
